The Swiss government reaffirms its intent to liberalise the power market

The Swiss Federal Council - Switzerland’s Government - has reaffirmed its intention to liberalise the domestic power market, following the result of the consultation procedure to amend the energy law (Loi sur l’énergie, LEne). The consultation showed support for the opening of the power market, but many participants called for additional incentives to invest in renewable energies, since the incentive measures included in the LEne will stop at the end of 2022 and at the end of 2030. Consequently, the Swiss government has tasked the Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to prepare an LEne amendment to introduce better incentives to invest in renewables energies.

According to the Swiss Federal Council, the new text should include an extension of investment contributions to renewable projects from 2030 until 2035, the introduction of tenders to award one-off payments for large PV plants, and the end of feed-in tariffs for wind, small hydro, biogas, and geothermal plants as of 2023.
