SPIC selects local suppliers for 6 GW Ulanqab wind project (China)

China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) has selected five Chinese companies to supply turbines for the CNY46.5bn (US$6.9bn) 6 GW Ulanqab wind power project in Inner Mongolia (China), namely Shanghai Electric (1.4 GW order), Goldwind (1.3 GW), Ming Yang (1.3 GW), Dongfang (1.1 GW) and CSIC Haizhuang (900 MW). Western developers GE, Siemens and Vestas placed bids during the tender but were not selected.

The project is subsidy-free and will be fully completed in 2023.

SPIC announced the project in January 2019. It will be the first subsidy-free wind power project in China. The project has been approved by the Ulanqab Municipal Development and Reform Commission. The wind project could supply nearly 19 TWh/year of electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. SPIC plans to start construction in 2020 and to complete it in 2023. It will be granted a few incentives such as ensured 20-year PPA's and guaranteed grid connection.
