Siemens has signed contracts worth €8bn to develop up to 16.4 GW of new power capacities in Egypt, corresponding to an increase in the country's installed capacity of more than 50% (31 GW installed in late 2013).
Siemens, in partnership with Egyptian groups Elsewedy Electric and Orascom Construction, will supply on a turnkey basis three CCGT power plants with a capacity of 4,800 MW each, named Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital. Each project will feature eight Siemens H-Class gas turbines. The first project is expected to be commissioned before the summer 2017. The three projects should be fully operational 38 months after the financing has closed and advance payments have been received.
In addition, Siemens will develop up to 12 wind parks (about 600 wind turbines) with a total capacity of 2,000 MW. The group will manufacture rotor blades in a new Egyptian plant in Ain Sokhna (to be delivered in the second half of 2017).
The orders expand on the memorandums of understanding announced at the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC) held in Sharm El Sheik in March 2015.
