The coal producing province of Shanxi (China) will introduce special emissions caps on large industrial sectors (of which thermal power and petrochemical industry) in October 2018 as part of its attempt to curb pollution. The emissions restrictions include namely sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. As many as 25 new emissions standards will be introduced for companies in the thermal power, steel, petrochemical, chemical, non-ferrous metals and cement sectors.
Shanxi belongs to the Chinese coal belt and produces approximately 900 Mt/year of coal, i.e. around 1/4 of China's production. The province of Shanxi is a key location of China's environmental protection policies. In January 2018, the province announced it would close all its small coal mines with an annual capacity of less than 600 kt/year. Open-pit mines will be required to have an annual capacity of at least 5 Mt/year and must comply with harsher rules on environmental protection. As per its air quality plan, the province will close down 22.4 Mt/year of coal capacity and will convert thousands of coal-fueled boilers into gas-fired ones.
