Reliance Power intends to complete first unit of its Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (SUMPP) using super-critical technology in January 2013. As agreed in the power purchase agreement, the first unit is expected to start operation in May 2013 while the six units of 660 MW each should be commissioned by June 2014. The project cost is estimated at $4.3bn. Reliance Power has entered into a 25-year PPA with off takers of power for the entire 3,960 MW capacity. Power generated from Sasan would be supplied to seven states — Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. In February 2011, the project has been registered with Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The registration with CDM-EB allows Reliance Power’s Sasan Project to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These CERs can be traded and sold, and will result in significant additional revenues for the super-critical ultra mega power project.
