German energy giant RWE posted its first loss in more than 60 years (- €2.8bn) in 2013, due to impairment losses of some €4.8bn, which RWE had to recognise for the full year, mainly in respect of its power plant fleet. RWE’s electricity generation fell by 5% to 216.7 TWh in 2013, owing to the reduction in conventional generation capacity. Conventional capacity dropped by 7.1% from 47.1 GW in 2012 to 43.7 GW in 2013: since the end of 2012, RWE's capacity has dropped by 2.9 GW. The decommissioning of Didcot A (hard coal), Fawley (oil) and Tilbury (biomass) power stations in the UK played an important role (3.6 GW reduction in RWE's capacity in the UK). However, capacity was also added, in particular the 787 MW gas-fired power plant near the town of Denizli in the west of Turkey, which was completed in the middle of 2013. CO2 emissions dropped by 9% in 2013 to 164 Mt (-30% to 18.9 Mt in the UK).
However, RWE produced more electricity from renewables than in 2012. Electricity sales declined by 2% to 270.9 TWh. Weather conditions caused a 9% increase in gas sales, to 335 TWh. Customer acquisitions were recorded Group-wide among industrial and commercial enterprises as well as distributors. As of 31 December 2013, the RWE Group’s fully consolidated companies supplied electricity to 16,079,000 customers, of which 6,696,000 were in Germany.
