Rosatom will build two additional 600 MW units at the Kola nuclear plant (Russia)

The Russian state-owned company Rosatom has announced that it plans to build two additional 600 MW nuclear reactors at the Kola nuclear power plant, located in the Murmansk region, northern Russia. The units (Units 1 & 2 of the Kola II project) will be medium-capacity Russian built VVER-S reactors, which will aim for a service life of 80 years. They are expected to be built between 2027 and 2037, and two similar units could be planned at the site in the future.

As of end-2024, nuclear represented about 11% of Russia’s installed capacity with 30 GW, and over 18% of its power mix. The existing Kola nuclear power plant consists of four 411 MW VVER V-230 reactors commissioned between 1973 and 1984.
