Qair reaches a new milestone for 1 GW Ayre offshore wind project (UK)

Qair, a French renewable developer, has secured planning approval from the Highland Council (Scotland, United Kingdom) for the onshore infrastructure associated with the 1GW Ayre floating wind project off Caithness and Orkney (Energy Voice, 12/03/2025). Its offshore consent application is still under consideration, with construction aimed to start around 2030 and first power expected between 2033 and 2035.

The wind capacity has been progressing rapidly since 2010, by around 2 GW/year on average, reaching 32 GW at the end of 2024. In 2024, around half of the wind capacity was offshore (15 GW). The UK has the second largest offshore wind capacity worldwide.
