Pakistan targets a 30% share of renewables in power mix by 2030

The government of Pakistan plans to increase the share of its power generation from renewables (excluding hydropower) from less than 4% in 2018 to 20% by 2025 and 30% by 2030. The target will include mainly wind and solar power, but also geothermal, tidal and biomass energy. The share of renewables (including hydropower) in Pakistan’s power mix could increase from around 26% in 2018 to reach 65% by 2030, thanks to a boost in hydropower capacity. Pakistan intends to add between 7 to 8 GW of renewable power capacity by 2025. The government plans to create an incentive program for investors, as part of its renewable energy policy that aims to raise the share of renewables in the power mix.

Under the new Alternative Renewable Energy Policy 2019, Pakistan aims to raise the renewable power capacity to 20 GW by 2030. Pakistan also expects renewables to generate low-cost power and to provide electricity at affordable rates to end-consumer. In 2019, wind and solar power capacities reached 1.2 GW and 1.3 GW, respectively, accounting for about 7% of Pakistan’s total electricity capacity. Around 1.2 GW of renewable projects (excluding hydro) are under construction (August 2020). Hydro, with 9.6 GW accounts for 26% of Pakistan’s installed. More than 10.6 GW of hydro projects are currently under construction.
