Oman expects Sohar refinery expansion to reduce crude oil exports

The Ministry of Oil and Gas of Oman expects the commissioning of new refining capacities at the Sohar refinery to reduce crude oil exports by around 50,000 bbl/d in early 2017.

The Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) is currently expanding its 116,400 bbl/d refinery in Sohar by 82,000 bbl/d (+70%); the commissioning has been delayed from late 2016 to the first quarter of 2017. New capacities should help Oman refine different crude mixes and raise the added value of its oil exports.

In addition, Orpic aims to complete the construction and to commission the 280-km long Muscat-Sohar multi-product (for transporting refined products) pipeline in 2017. Oman Oil and the International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC, United Arab Emirates) aim to commission their new Duqm refinery by 2019. The 230,000 bbl/d refinery would boost the refining capacity by more than 70% to more than 534,000 bbl/d.
