Octopus Energy Generation and ZE Energy have partnered to build the 99 MW/895 MWh Sessa Aurunca stand-alone BESS in Campania, Italy (Octopus press release, 16/06/2026).
Scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2026, the facility has secured a 15-year contract from system operator Terna through the Italian MACSE auction scheme, with full operations targeted for 2028. The battery expects to absorb excess renewable power during peak wind and solar generation, discharging it back to the grid during high-demand periods, while being connected to a substation to create a local energy hub.
Octopus plans to invest approximately half of the equity required for the standalone battery through its Sky fund, while developer ZE Energy is scheduled to deliver the BESS. Once operational, the installation plans to power up to 130,000 homes daily, becoming the largest standalone battery in south-central Italy, according to Octopus Energy.
The project aligns with the Italian transition towards clean energy as the country aims to source 70% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. It also supports ZE Energy’s goal of 1.5 GW of installed capacity by 2030.
