Norway invites bidders for the development of a CCS project

The Norwegian government has invited companies to submit applications to use subsea reservoirs to store CO2 near the offshore oil and gas field Troll. The government aims at issuing first permits for the injection and storage of CO2 are expected to be awarded in the fourth quarter of 2018.

In October 2017, Total, Shell and Equinor (Statoil) inked a partnership agreement to support the development of CCS projects on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). The three companies will prepare concept and pre-engineering studies in order to get accurate cost estimates for a possible final investment decision, which is expected to be made by the Norwegian Parliament in 2020-2021. The current project design entails a facility which will capture, compress and temporarily store 1.5 Mt/year of CO2 from three industrial plants and then transport it by ship from the capture area to an onshore receiving facility in Norway. However, the government dropped Yara International's project in May 2018 after it estimated that the project was not cost efficient.
