Norway approves Equinor's Oseberg gas field expansion

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy of Norway has approved Equinor's plans to increase gas production at its Oseberg offshore gas field; the group had submitted an amended application for development and operation of the Oseberg-field in November 2021.

Equinor and its partners plan to invest NOK 10bn (€967m) investments in infrastructure upgrades on the field, including the partial electrification of the Oseberg Field Centre and Oseberg South platform and the installation of two new compressors on the Oseberg Field Centre. The start up of Oseberg gas phase 2 is expected in 2026. The project should raise the remaining recoverable gas and oil reserves from the field by 54% after 2025 and make Oseberg the third largest gas field in Norway after Troll and Snøhvit in terms of remaining reserves. Between 2022 and 2040, Oseberg is expected to produce 100 bcm of gas.

Oseberg is owned by Equinor (49.3%, operator), Petoro (33.6%), TotalEnergies (14.7%) and ConocoPhillips (2.4%). Its gas production has been ramping up recently, from 3 bcm in 2018 to around 8 bcm in 2022.
