The government of the Nigerian state of Enugu has announced plans to build a 660 MW coal-fired power plant in the Enugu state, located in the south-eastern region of the country (Nigerian government press release, 07/05/2026). According to the announcement, the project is expected to break ground in July 2026, targeting its commissioning for 2028. The state’s local government aims to take advantage of its coal resources to secure and produce affordable electricity.
At the end of 2025, Nigeria’s installed capacity amounted to nearly 16 GW, of which over 80% was gas-fired. Part of installed capacities are idle and gas only covered 63% of the power mix in 2025 (36% hydropower and 1% solar).
