The government of New York (United States) has announced a new plan for reducting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and consumer energy costs by 2025. The government will incentivise energy developers, residential households along with commercial and institutional building owners in order to pursue building improvements to reduce energy consumption by 185 trillion BTUs (4.7 Mtoe) below the 2025 forecast energy use. This would correspond to a more than 40% improvement in energy efficiency - compared to the current trend - by 2025 and will also pave the way for the achievement of annual electric efficiency savings of 3% of investor-owned utility sales in 2025.
Meeting this new energy efficiency target is expected to contribute to roughly 1/3 of the GHG emissions reductions needed to meet New York's climate target of 40% reduction by 2030. It will also cut consumer energy costs. As of 2017, New York taxpayers contributed to about US$35bn/year for electricity and heating fuels while buildings are responsible for approximately 59% of the statewide GHG emissions.
