New South Wales (Australia) will ban new coal mines

The state government of New South Wales (Australia) has proposed to ban the development of new greenfield coal mines, under a new "NSW Coal Industry 2026–50" policy (New South Wales state government press release, 18/03/2026). Proposals to extend existing mines and exploration in adjacent areas, as well as extension of the operating life of existing mines, will still be considered. In December 2025, the New South Wales Net Zero concluded new expansions were not consistent with the state’s legislative emissions reductions commitments.

The state government pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% in 2030 compared to 2005 levels, and by 70% in 2035, targeting carbon neutrality by 2050. New South Wales accounts for around 40% of black coal production in Australia. In 2024, Australia was the world’s fifth largest coal and lignite producer, and the second largest exporter after Indonesia.
