National Grid and TenneT plan a 2 GW UK-Netherlands power interconnector

Power transmission system operators (TSOs) National Grid Ventures (NGV) and TenneT have signed a Joint Development Agreement for a 2 GW interconnector linking the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (Offshore Energy, 02/04/2026). The hybrid interconnector is expected to connect both countries through the planned Nederwiek 3 offshore wind project in the Dutch North Sea

The project was originally announced in 2023, and advances have been made on both countries regarding geophysical and geotechnical surveys. In the Netherlands, the project has already been included in its Offshore Wind Energy Development Framework, while it is expected to submit for its Development Consent Order (DCO) in the UK in 2026. Commissioning is expected on the early 2030s (as of 2032 at the earliest), aiming to provide enough power to supply up to 2.5 million households

The UK and the Netherlands have an existing interconnector, the 1 GW BritNed, which has recently celebrated its 15-years of service (Tennet press release, 01/04/2026). The 260 km subsea link entered operations in 2011 and has transmitted nearly 93 TWh of electricity during its time of service. During the past 5 years, the interconnector has exchanged enough electricity to power about 1.4 million homes
