Malaysia has published its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) (UNFCCC, 24/10/2025). The country has committed to peaking its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions no later than 2034, with the ambition to achieve the peak earlier by 2029. By 2035, the country aims for an economy-wide absolute emissions reduction of 15–30 MtCO₂eq compared with the peak. This includes "an unconditional reduction of up to 20 MtCO₂eq, with a further 10 MtCO₂eq reduction conditional upon the provision of climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building support from international sources".
In its first revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Malaysia pledged to unconditionally reduce its economy-wide carbon intensity (CO2 emission per unit of GDP) by 45% in 2030 compared to 2005 level.
On the renewables front, Malaysia's Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER, 2021) targets 31% of installed capacity from renewable sources by 2025 and 40% by 2035. At the end of 2024, renewable energy accounted for 22% of installed capacity, approaching the 25% target for 2025.
