Kenya has release its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, in which the country defines new objectives of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. Under its Second NDC, Kenya will reduce GHG emissions by 35% by 2035 relative to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario of 215 MtCO2eq in 2035, leading to the abatement of 75.25 MtCO2eq. Subject to national circumstances, Kenya will mobilise domestic resources to realise 15.05 MtCO2eq (20% of the 75.25 MtCO2eq) of the emission reductions. The remaining 60.20 MtCO2eq (80%) of the emission reduction will be achieved through a combination of international support, including finance, investments, technology development and transfer. Kenya also aims to increase renewable power generation in the national grid towards 100% by 2035 (up from the current 90%).
Under its previous NDC (uptaded first NDC, released in 2020), Kenya planned to reduce GHG emissions by 32% by 2030 relative to a BAU scenario of 143 MtCO2eq. The country planned to mobilise domestic resources to realise 13% of the emissions reduction, while the remaining 87% would require international support. Kenya’s Second NDC remains unclear if this 2030 objective is maintained or not.
