Kenya’s Government has announced that Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) will be the owner-operator of the country’s first nuclear power plant (KenGen press release, 01/12/2025). The project will be developed in partnership with the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and it is expected to have an initial capacity of about 2 GW, with the potential to increase to 6 GW over time.
The project is aligned with KenGen’s long-term plan to help the country transition to a diversified, secure clean-energy system. Kenya aims to add about 10 GW of electricity and diversify its national grid.
