Kansai Electric plans 1,950 MW CCGT renewal of Himeji 1 power plant (Japan)

Kansai Electric Power Company has decided to refurbish its 1,442 MW Himeji No. 1 Power Station in Hyogo Prefecture (Japan) by replacing existing LNG-fired equipment with high-efficiency combined cycle (CCGT) units (Kansai Electric press release, 18/05/2026).

The Himeji No.1 power plant has been operational for 30 years, with Unit 5 (729 MW) commissioned in April 1995 and Unit 6 (713 MW) commissioned in May 1996. This renewal plan aims to build three 650 MW-class units with a thermal efficiency of around 63% (compared to 54% for the current power plant) to replace existing units, which will increase the power plant's total capacity to approximately 1,950 MW. Commercial operation of the renewed facility is scheduled for fiscal year 2033 or later.
