Japan records lowest GHG emissions since 2013 during 2024 (994 MtCO2)

Japan has released its National GHG Emissions and Removals for 2024, announcing that the country’s GHG emissions reached 994 MtCO2 in 2024, representing a decrease of 1.9% (18.8 MtCO2compared to 2023, and a 28.7% (399.5 MtCO2) decrease compared to 2013 (Japanese government press release, 14/04/2026).

According to the report, the recorded emissions have reached their lowest level since 2013, falling below the 1 Gt milestone for the first time. The main factors attributed for the decrease are determined as a reduction on energy consumption due to a lower production in the manufacturing industries and the increase of renewable and nuclear energy on the country’s power mix.

According to Enerdata’s Energy Report, Japan reached a 28.5% of renewables on its power mix in 2024. Including nuclear, carbon-free sources accounted for 36% on the same year.
