Italy's TSO gives grid connection approval to 500 MW/3 GWh BESS project

Terna, the Italian power transmission system operator (TSO), has approved the grid connection for a 509 MW/3 GWh BESS project in Brindisi (southern Italy), developed by Israel-based firm Airengy. The project is a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with conglomerate Yehuda Levi Group, and will connect to the Pignicelle substation. It will have the capacity to store 4 to 8 hours of electricity (2 to 4 GWh), with 3 GWh as an average. Construction is expected to start within 20 months and will require investment of around EUR230m (USD265m). A regulatory application should next be submitted to Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.

In 2025, Terna held an auction to procure 10 GWh of BESS capacity, in which another large battery project was handed a contract.
