Israel extends solar energy quotas to 520 MW

The government of Israel has approved an expansive renewable energy strategy, aimed at saving ILS 2.5bn/year (more than US$660m/year), transferring to solar PV sector a 520 MW renewable energy target from other renewable sources and approving state-guarantees for solar projects in the West Bank (Palestine). In December 2012, the Ministerial Committee for Renewable Energy had approved a transfer of funds dedicated to 300 MW wind projects to the PV industry, but this decision had been delayed due to cost issues. The solar PV sector will benefit from the diversion of a total 520 MW, including 70 MW from large wind projects, 20 MW from small-wind projects, and 60 MW from biogas production. The licenses for two planned CSP solar projects will be converted to PV (180 MW), to save about ILS 1.5bn/year (US$400m/year). The Ashalim solar project (two CSP plants and a PV plant), with a total capacity of 270 MW received government approval with an additional 30 MW.
