The Ministry of Oil of Iraq has extended the bid deadline for the construction of a 100,000 bbl/d (5 Mt/year) refinery in the Kut province to 4 October 2018. The project will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) or a build-operate-transfer (BOOT) investment model.
The Kut refinery project is one of the numerous projects proposed by the government to make Iraq self-sufficient in oil products. The refining capacity could be raised to more than 1.4 mb/d through several projects: 140,000 bbl/d Karbala, 150,00 bbl/d Maysan, 150,00 bbl/d Kirkuk or 46,000 bbl/dd Bazian. The construction of a 300,000 bbl/d facility project at the Faw port in the Basrah region was awarded to two Chinese companies in January 2018. In addition, the government plans to invite bidders for the development of three other refineries: two 150,000 bbl/d facilities in Nasiriya (southern Iraq) and in the western Anbar province, along with a 100,000 bbl/d refinery in the city of Qayyarah in the Mosul region.
