Japan's oil and gas company Inpex has delayed the start of gas production from the Ichthys offshore gas field in Western Australia located 220 km off Western Australia and 820 km from Darwin (Northern Territory). The company did not give any timetable for the production startup. Initially expected to be start-up for the end of 2016, it has been pushed back to mid-2017 and then postponed again to March 2018. Inpex commissioned all onshore and offshore facilities in early June 2018 but will conduct final safety checks before commercial operations.
Ichthys' gas production will be exported via the 8.9 Mt/year Ichthys LNG project, which will comprise an onshore LNG plant, a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility (labelled as Ichthys Venturer) and a 890-km long gas export pipeline. The project is led by Inpex (62.245%) and Total (30%), while the remaining stakes are spread between the Australian subsidiaries of CPC Corporation (2.625%), Tokyo Gas (1.575%), Osaka Gas (1.2%), Kansai Electric Power (1.2%), JERA (0.735%) and Toho Gas (0.42%).
