Indonesia has updated its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the 2031 to 2035 period, pledging to reduce its emissions by 31.89% (unconditionally) to 43.20% (conditionally) by 2030 compared to the Business-as-Usual scenario as baseline for mitigation target (previously set at 29% up to 41% by 2030) (UNFCCC, 27/10/2024).
- The country aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, estimating a peak in GHG emissions in 2030 at 1,244 MtCO2e and then decline and continue to decline to reach 540 MtCO2e in 2050.
- Indonesia also plans to increase the share of renewables on its power mix to 19-23% in 2030, 36-40% in 2040, and 70-72% in 2060 (Regulation No. 40 Year 2025 on National Energy Policy)
- The implementation of Indonesia’s Second NDC is estimated to require an investment of IDR7,552.5tn (almost US$473bn).
The updated NDC aligns with Indonesia’s national strategies such as the Nation's Low Emissions Development Strategies (LTS-LCCR 2050) and the Long Term Development Planning Document (RPJPN 2025-2045).
