Indonesia approves Udabari gas field and Vorwata CCUS projects

The Indonesian upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas has approved the plans of development (PoD) for the Ubadari gas field and for the Vorwata carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) project in Papua Barat (Indonesia) proposed by the Tangguh LNG partners. The project aims to develop the Ubadari gas field and to inject 25 MtCO2 back into the reservoir of the Vorwata gas field, which will enhance gas recovery: overall, the potential additional recovery is estimated at 1.3 tcf (nearly 37 bcm) of gas. Additional gas supply will be fed into the Tangguh LNG plant, owned and operated by BP (40.2%), in partnership with CNOOC, Mitsubishi, Inpex and JOGMEC. The 7.6 Mt/year liquefaction plant is currently being expanded and the third train (3.8 Mt/year) is expected to be commissioned in 2022.

Partners aim to conduct the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the Ubadari gas field development and the Vorwata CCUS project in mid-2022. Pending final investment decision (FID), the project could be started as soon as 2026. The CCUS project should remove up to 90% of the reservoir-associated CO2, i.e., nearly half of Tangguh LNG emissions.
