India’s NTPC plans to add 30 GW of thermal power capacity by 2032

The Indian power group NTPC plans to add 30 GW of thermal power capacity by 2032 under its revised capacity addition plans. NTPC has revised its plans for thermal capacity additions to add another 4 GW of brownfield capacity to its initial plan. The group now plans 30 GW of new thermal capacity by 2031-32, instead of the 26 GW planned by 2030-31.

NTPC plans to install around 3 GW of thermal capacity and 5 GW of renewable capacity during FY2026.

As of end-2023, India’s installed capacity was made up of 53% coal-fired capacity, 23% wind and solar, 10% hydro, 6% gas, 4% oil, 1% nuclear and 2% biomass. Coal-fired capacity represented 72% of power generation in 2023.
