India will have a fully-interconnected power grid by July 2014

The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) plans to reach full operations on the interconnected grid of India by July 2014. Currently, four regional grids are interconnected and operating in a synchronous mode allowing free flow of electricity across the regions. The Southern Grid (Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) was connected and synchronised to the national grid on 1 January 2014. The national grid, including the southern grid, will become fully operational by July 2014, and its capacity will be raised from about 1,500 MW to 5,000 MW. This interconnection is expected to improve electricity supply security in southern States.
