The Government of India is working on a plan to roll out 3,000 MW of grid connected solar power projects in phase 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (2013-2017). Solar capacity will consist of PV projects and will include four solar thermal power projects. The Government will also work on 6,000 MW projects through solar-specific renewable purchase obligation (RPO) scheme.
The awaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission aims to create an enabling policy framework for the deployment of 20,000 MW of solar power by 2022 and to ramp up capacity of grid-connected solar power generation to 1,000 MW by 2013; an additional 3,000 MW by 2017 through the
mandatory use of the renewable purchase obligation by utilities backed with a preferential tariff. This capacity can be more than doubled – reaching
10,000 MW installed power by 2017 or more, based on the enhanced and enabled international finance and technology transfer.
