The US company GE Vernova and China’s Harbin Electric have announced the start of commercial operations on a 2 GW gas-fired power plant in Guangdong Province, southern China. The Guangming power plant, operated by the Chinese state-owned power utility Shenzhen Energy Group Corporation, features three GE Vernova 9HA.01 gas turbines. The GE Vernova 9HA.01 gas turbine has the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas. Harbin Electric provided steam turbines and generators for the project. The Guangming power plant will help replace coal-fired power generation, as China aims to achieve a carbon emissions peak by 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
In October 2024, Guangdong Energy Group started commercial operation for the 2.4 GW Dongguan Ningzhou CCGT power plant, also located in Guangdong and featuring GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 gas turbines.
As of end-2023, gas-fired capacity only represented 4% of China’s installed capacity and power generation (compared to 43% and 62% for coal-fired capacity).
