Gas Malaysia gets green light for 6 Mt/year FSRU project in Malaysia

Gas Malaysia has received a letter to proceed (LTP) from the Malaysian Energy Commission (EC) for its LNG regasification terminal project in Yan, Kedah (Malaysia) (Bursa Malaysia statement, 18/03/2026).

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia (Malaysian official stock exchange), the company stated that regasification terminal Yan, west of Pulau Bunting, is envisaged as an offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a planned regasification capacity of up to 6 Mt/year. The project's development cost is currently estimated at approximately MYR2bn to MYR3bn (USD510m–USD765m).

The gas provider noted that the LTP is subject to certain conditions imposed by the EC, which the company is required to fulfil within the stipulated timeline in order to progress the development of the project.

Increased domestic demand has led to the commissioning of two LNG import terminals: one in Melaka in 2013, with a capacity of 3.8 Mt/year (FSRU located offshore Sungai Udang), and a second onshore terminal of 3.5 Mt/year in Pengerang in 2017. The country imported around 7.5 Mt of LNG in 2024Malaysia is also among the world’s largest exporters of LNG (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
