French Lower House of Parliament agrees on 27 GW nuclear newbuild programme

The French Lower House of Parliament has approved a massive nuclear newbuild programme as part of the country's energy roadmap until 2035 seeking to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. The law article aims to maintain the existing nuclear fleet (63 GW). It also aims to raise nuclear capacity by 27 GW by 2050, starting the construction of at least 10 GW of new capacities, i.e., the equivalent of six EPR2 nuclear reactors, by 2026 at the latest, and launching the construction of another 13 GW (8 EPR2 reactors) by 2030. The construction of a 4th generation reactor will be considered and a fast breeder reactor (FBR) demonstrator may enter construction by 2030.

Contrary to the first version of the text adopted by the Upper House of the Parliament, the text no longer includes targets for nuclear in the power mix, neither plans for the construction of a small modular reactor (SMR) by 2030.
