French Engie acquires UK Power Networks in a EUR12bn deal (UK)

Engie has acquired 100% of UK Power Networks (UKPN), an electricity distributor in the United Kingdom in a GBP10.5bn (EUR12bn) transaction (Engie press release, 25/02/2026). The company describes the move as a “milestone to become the best energy transition utility, by strengthening its position in regulated electricity networks”. The acquisition has increased Engie’s presence in the UK, becoming its second largest country of activity.

UK Power Networks has the capacity to deliver 71 TWh/year of electricity to 8.5 million customers through the operation of three operation licenses covering London, the South East and the East of England. Engie expects UKPN to play a key role to support the expected growth in electricity demand in the UK and help reach the country’s electrification needs and carbon-neutrality goals by 2050.

There are 7 Distribution Network Operators in the UK: UK Power Networks, Electricity North West, Northern Powergrid, SSE, Scottish Power, Western Power Distribution (WPD) and NIE ESB.
