The US energy utility Florida Power & Light (FPL) has decommissioned the 1,300 MW ageing coal-fired St. Johns River Power Park plant located in Jacksonville, Florida (United States), considering that it was no longer economical to operate. According to FPL, it will save its customers around US$183m/year and prevent more than 5.6 MtCO2/year emissions. This is the second coal-fired asset out of three planned to be retired by FPL to eliminate coal-fired generation from its energy mix.
On the other hand, the company is moving forward with its ongoing strategy of advancing renewable energies and has commissioned four 74.5 MW solar facilities with a combined capacity of 298 MW: FPL Horizon located in Alachua and Putnam counties, FPL Coral Farms in Putnam County, FPL Indian River in Indian River County and FPL Wildflower in DeSoto County. By 1 March 2018, the company will commission another four 74.5 MW solar parks in the Brevard, Indian River, Hendry and St. Lucie Counties.
