Energy World Corp (EWC), expects to commission its new LNG import terminal in the Philippines by early 2015. The Australian company invested nearly US$1bn in the regasification project, located in Pagbilao (Quezon province, in Luzon), which will have a capacity of 3 Mt/year (4.1 bcm/year). It will deliver gas to a 650 MW CCGT power plant nearby, to be developed in phases, with 200 MW expected in early 2015 and a further 450 MW in early 2016.
The Philippines is facing a rising power demand while some coal-fired power projects have been delayed by local opposition. The sole gas field in the country, located in Malampaya and operated by Shell, already supplies three gas-fired power plants accounting for 1/3 of the power generation in Luzon. Additional LNG projects are proposed to improve gas supply, such as Shell's 4 Mt/year FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit) project expected in Batangas by 2016 or PNOC's 3.5 Mt/year LNG hub project in Bataan planned by 2018.
