European Energy has received planning approval for the 1.1 GW Upper Calliope solar project in Queensland (Australia), setting it up for advanced development (European Energy press release, 19/12/2025). The approval allows the project to continue towards its “final design, grid connection processes and construction preparation.” Construction is expected to start in 2026. Once operational, the project should generate 2.8 TWh/year.
The project has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Rio Tinto for its full output to support the mining company on its operations in Queensland, including an aluminium smelting and alumina refining.
