Estonia targets 75% reduction in CO2 emissions from 1990 to 2050

Estonia aims to cut CO2 emissions by 75% by 2050 compared to 1990 (ie a cut by about 25% compared to current emissions). To reach this goal, the Baltic country will have to reduce emissions from power generation from oil shale; the oil shale branch will have to invest in purification equipments to reduce exhaust gases and to focus on oil production from shale (residues could be used in power generation).

Estonia's energy strategy already includes plans to reduce the consumption of oil shale: by 2020 its share should represent 30% of energy consumption, compared to 60% at present. It aims to limit the share of oil shale in the country's electricity production to less than 70% by 2018 (from 94% in 2007).
