Eskom halts nuclear plan amidst financial difficulties (South Africa)

The South African power company Eskom has published its operational performance results for the six months ending in September 2017, reporting declining sales and higher financing costs. The 2.2% tariff hike endorsed by South Africa's energy regulator Nersa for 2017-2018 was not sufficient to offset the 1.9% decrease in sales volumes over the March-September 2017 period and escalating municipal arrear debt. Overall, Eskom's revenues eroded by 2% and cash from operations fell by more than 30%.

Eskom's funding plans are now limited and the power utility is not able to say whether it can sustain nuclear in the future. In December 2015, Eskom issued a request for information to companies interested in participating in the construction of nuclear power plants, in line with South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan for 2010-2030 (9600 MW of new nuclear capacity, with the first reactor expected by 2023). The company's focus is now the support of the current assets and the fulfillment of the coal-fired plants development.
