Eskom delayed the Kusile coal-fired project by one year

Eskom delayed by one year its Kusile power plant as the project's costs increased. The 4,800 MW coal-fired project, located in Mpumalaya, will be completed by 2017. The project was initially scheduled to have the first of the six units commissioned in June 2013, and the last one in October 2016. In addition, Eskom is considering the sale of 30% to 49% of the project to private investors. The Sere wind farm project (100 MW) is also delayed by one year. Eskom's other new coal-fired station, Medupi, will be built in the Limpopo Province. With a total capacity of 4,800 MW, the facility will be the fourth-largest coal plant and the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world. The first 800 MW unit will start operation in 2012.

Eskom applied for a 35% increase in power tariff every year for the next three years (45% initially asked to the regulator NERSA). The company plans to double its installed capacity to 80,000 MW by 2026.
