Energy storage systems provider NHOA Energy, in partnership with France’s Engie, has begun construction of an 80 MW/320 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Engie’s Drogenbos 460 MW gas-fired power plant, located near Brussels, in Belgium (ENGIE press release, 27/05/2026). The final investment decision for the project was made in October 2025.
“From September 2027, 88 battery containers will be able to store or reinject into the grid the average daily electricity consumption of nearly 40,000 households,” according to the ENGIE press release. The CEO of Engie Belgium added: “Engie has set itself the target of operating 500 MW of battery storage capacity in Belgium by 2030”.
With the operational battery park in Vilvoorde and the one in Kallo, currently under construction, this brings ENGIE’s total battery storage capacity in Belgium to 1,520 MWh.
NHOA Energy, which until 2021 was a subsidiary of Engie under the name Engie EPS, was sold to the Taiwan Cement Corporation.
