Enel Chile, a subsidiary of the Italian utility Enel, has announced the start of operations of its 204 MW Domeyko solar PV plant located in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile. The start of the solar plant, which will inject around 590 GWh/year of electricity into Chile’s National Electric System, was authorised by the country’s National Electricity Coordinator on 7 February 2023. The plant is expected to power 251,000 Chilean households and avoid the emission of more than 465 ktCO2.
Enel Chile also announced that it plans to add 1.9 GW of renewable capacity to its portfolio in the South American country by 2025.
At the end of 2021, solar accounted for 15% of Chile's installed capacity with 4.7 GW. The country commissioned 1.1 GW of solar projects in 2021. Over 3.5 GW of solar projects are currently under construction in the country and more than 27 GW are under development.
