ENEC will start civil works for two nuclear units (2.8 GW) (UAE)

ENEC, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, has been authorised to civil works for the Barakah nuclear units 3 and 4 in the United Arab Emirates. Construction on the two new units will be officially launched after the pouring of first concrete relevant to nuclear safety. Two units of similar size are already under construction and are expected to be commissioned in 2017 and 2018. The two other units (1,400 MW APR1400 pressurized water reactors supplied by a south Korean consortium led by Kepco) are expected to be commissioned in 2019 and 2020.

The United Arab Emirates aims to reach 20 GWe of nuclear capacity, to meet a soaring electricity demand (expected to grow at a pace of 9%/year). Total installed generation capacity is expected to reach 40 GW by 2020. By this date, the nuclear plant should meet about 25% of power demand, with renewables covering up to 7% of the demand and gas the remaining 68% (50% from domestic gas).
