Egypt set to reach 30% of its power mix from renewable energy

Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has announced that the country is set to reach 30% of its total energy mix until 2030. According to a Ministry’s report on its advancements to promote renewable energies, the country’s planned renewable power capacity until 2030 will exceed the target of 21 GW and 1.9 GW with the storage battery system, reaching a total of 25.1 GW (13.7 GW of wind, 8.5 GW of solar, 2.8 GW of hydro and 3.3 GW of BESS).

Aligned with this announcement, the Egyptian government has delivered certificates of qualification of 4 projects to produce solar and wind energy with a total capacity of 400 MW. Each project plans to sell its production to industrial customers as part of the country’s plan to liberalise the electricity market according to its new Electricity Law. Out of 7 projects submitted for approval with a capacity of 100 MW each, the selected projects correspond to Neptune Company, AMIA Power Electricity Company, TAQA PV and, Enara Company.

Egypt has an electricity capacity of over 59 GW (end 2024), of which renewables only accounted for only around 11%.
