Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) has launched the process for allocating about 6 million m2 of land to seven international companies and consortiums for the development of 27 GW of solar and wind projects in Egypt. These projects will involve investments amounting to around US$40bn over the next 10 years.
The land allocation is related to seven pacts that Egypt signed in February 2024 with developers of green hydrogen and renewable energy projects. The companies involved include Bash Global, Smart Energy, Gamma Construction and Meridiam, SK E&C Plant-C&C North Africa, El Tokkel Geela, AMM Power, and United Energy Group. The granted land will be located in the New Valley Governorate and the West Nile areas of southern Egypt.
The Egyptian Government has signed several land receipt agreements: with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power for the development of a 10 GW wind project (in 2023), with the Norwegian renewable developer Scatec and a consortium led by Orascom Construction for the development of two wind projects totalling 8 GW to be built in the governorate of Sohag (in May 2024) and with the Emirati company Masdar for a 10 GW onshore wind project to be developed in West Sohag (central Egypt) in May 2024.
At the end of 2022, wind represented 2.3% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.4 GW (2.8% with 1.6 GW in 2023) and 3.5% of its power generation with 7.4 TWh. As for solar, in 2022, it represented 2.9% of the country’s installed capacity with nearly 1.7 GW (3.1% with 1.8 GW in 2023) and 2.5% of its power generation with 5.4 TWh.
