The British power producer Drax Power has submitted an application to the United Kingdom Planning Inspectorate for a Development Consent Order (DCO) regarding the 3,600 MW Repower coal-to-gas conversion project. The company plans to replace the two remaining coal-fired units at the 2,580 MW Drax power plant in North Yorkshire (United Kingdom) with up to 3,600 MW of high-efficiency gas-fired capacity and up to 200 MW of battery storage. The Planning Inspectorate will have 28 days to accept or reject the application. If accepted, the proposals will be reviewed by the Planning Inspectorate and then by the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) with a decision expected in 2019.
The North Yorkshire power plant was originally a 3,900 MW coal-fired power plant consisting of six 660 MW units. Three 645 MW units of the coal-fired power plant have progressively been converted to biomass (first unit in 2013, then in 2014 and 2017) and the fourth 645 MW unit should be converted by late 2018 as well. In late May 2018, Drax Power announced plans to install a demonstration carbon capture storage (CCS) project at the 2,580 MW power plant.
