Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced it has received 5 bids from international organisations for the third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar power plant project. The lowest recorded bid for the 800 MW project reached US$2.99c/kWh. The price has been pulled dramatically low as the average cost for power produced from natural gas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), its dominant source, is estimated at approximately US$7/kWh or more than twice the lowest bid. DEWA received 95 Expression of Interest responses from international solar organisations.
The Rashid Al Maktoum solar park was initially planned to have a capacity of 1,000 MW but DEWA increased capacity twice and is now expected reach 5,000 MW in 2030. The State of the UAE, through its Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, targets to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy sources by 2020. This target will increase to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050.
