Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) has selected West Virginia (United States) for a 1.8 GW combined-cycle natural gas power plant (CCGT) utilising carbon capture and storage (CCS). Following permitting and construction, the project should go into operation later in the 2020s. The plant will benefit from the 45Q federal tax credit, which was recently expanded to incentivise carbon capture and sequestration for power generation. CPV, an affiliate of OPC Energy, owns 5.5 GW of clean generation across the United States and the company’s Asset Management division manages 7,335 MW of power plants in nine states. Gas accounts for 44% of the country’s capacity mix, with 560 GW. More than 10.1 GW of gas projects are currently under construction and 21.8 GW under development.
