The Iraqi government has signed an agreement with two Chinese companies, PowerChina and Norinco International, for the construction of the 300,000 bbl/d Al Faw (also spelled Fao) refinery at the Faw port in the Basrah region. The total amount of the contract was not disclosed but it estimated at US$3bn. Once built, the facility would help Iraq reach self-sufficiency in oil products.
Iraq currently plans to retire part of the existing refining capacity and build new facilities. It aims at increasing the country's domestic refining capacity to more than 1.4 mb/d through several projects: 140,000 bbl/d Karbala, 150,00 bbl/d Maysan, 150,00 bbl/d Kirkuk or 46,000 bbl/dd Bazian. It also plans to invite bidders for the development of three other refineries: two 150,000 bbl/d facilities in Nasiriya (southern Iraq) and in the western Anbar province, along with a 100,000 bbl/d refinery in the city of Qayyarah in the Mosul region.
